Unwatering
Some Times I Feel
Unwatering
The Unwatering Ritual helped me connect to flooded New Orleans during my displacement. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers created an Unwatering Task Force to pump nearly nine billion gallons of water out of Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes daily. As the Army Corps was fixing the levy breaches and pumping the water out of the city, I was moving water from one basin to another. I needed to recreate a connection to the unbelievable destruction and mourn the losses of a way of life as well as to the many people who lost their lives in this tragedy. For every day that the Corps of Engineers was moving flood waters out of the city, I would also be moving water. The water came from Bayou Lafourche, which used to be the largest distributary of the Mississippi River.
